‘Bad audio is bad business’: how EPOS is transforming the modern workplace

Joe Debold tells Technology Record about the use of next-generation technology and artificial intelligence to create optimal listening experiences

Our research has found that the majority (95 per cent) of today’s modern workers admit that their concentration and efficiency at work has suffered due to sound issues.

At EPOS, everything we do is based on deep user insights. We know that bad audio is bad business, and that poor sound quality not only leads to frustration, confusion and wasted time, but also negatively affects your ability to focus and concentrate, and ultimately your overall performance.

We have made it our mission to unleash human potential by perfecting audio experiences through a science-based approach to deliver excellent sound that enables you to focus and perform better while spending less energy.

EPOS headsets, speakerphones and video bars are built on technology that is designed to support the brain’s natural way of processing sound. This means less fatigue and more focus for both you and the people you are communicating with. Ultimately, it all comes down to understanding how the brain makes sense of sound because a great audio experience only happens when technologies support the brain’s listening process, helping it to perform as intended. We call it EPOS BrainAdapt.

We divide our technologies into three subcategories – EPOS AI, EPOS Sound and EPOS Voice – to ensure a clear understanding of our technical spectrum.

EPOS AI creates an optimised audio experience that pushes communication further and boosts users’ ability to succeed. The artificial intelligence and machine learning system is embedded in EPOS audio devices and interacts with advanced beamforming and noise reduction algorithms to automatically adapt to speech while studying the sound environment. The technology within EPOS AI then reduces ambient sounds, thus transmitting speech loudly and clearly to the listener.

EPOS Sound makes the most of premium audio devices by delivering a natural listening experience. Through continuous monitoring of ambient sound and varying noise levels, our technology helps users concentrate while protecting their hearing. The technology creates an augmented and immersive audio experience that makes the user feel as though they are speaking to someone face-to-face, no matter where they are. What’s more, users can listen to their teammates or keep an ear out for announcements without removing the headset. For more focus, users can also block out background noise with ease, allowing their own performance and energy levels rise.

EPOS Voice improves speech intelligibility and enables better conversations by creating an acoustic lens that focuses speech. By removing remaining noise disturbances, it ensures a more natural reproduction of the human voice. It also recognises and removes background noise to ensure users can be heard wherever they are, creating the ultimate audio experience. At EPOS, we just don’t talk about using these technologies; we know how to bring them into the real world. In conjunction with Microsoft, EPOS brought to market the first edge AI-based headset in the unified communications space – EPOS ADAPT 660.

EPOS technology is not limited to headsets, though. Our research and development team continues to use technology to perfect the audio experience in the hybrid environment. For example, in partnership with Microsoft, EPOS has developed premium speakerphones and video conferencing solutions that are certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows and Android. Whether it’s for a huddle or a small, medium or large meeting room, EPOS brings its technologies into all Microsoft Teams-certified products.
