Openet uses Microsoft Azure to meet increased telecoms demand

Digital communications software provider Openet is using Microsoft Azure to meet increased telecoms demand. The firm’s Openet Data Fabric (ODF) has processed over a trillion events per day on the Microsoft cloud, demonstrating increased efficiency, security, and readiness for real-time data growth for telecoms networks. An event includes anything from calls, texts to data and social use on smartphones, to any interaction between connected devices.

Openet’s significant threshold for cloud-based event processing demonstrates that the cloud is fit for telecom network grade volumes of activity. The processing speeds were 11.5 million events per second with a 20 node cluster. This would scale above the one trillion events per day (TED) goal of the trial.

Openet also expects that trials with ODF in a cloud native architecture would in fact be even more efficient.

“This is a monumental achievement by both teams,” said Openet’s global vice president of Technology and Support, Michael O’Sullivan. “To put this achievement into perspective, Google processes approximately 3.5 billion searches per day, which extrapolates to 1.2 trillion searches per year. One trillion events per day is just the start for us. The next step is more extended trialling of the cloud-native optimisation features we have developed for our full suite of data solutions on Microsoft Azure.”
