Urban mobility data analytics company Moovit is partnering with Microsoft to build richer apps for commuters worldwide, by integrating its public transit data with  Azure Maps.

Moovit is a free public transit app which, according to a press release, amasses around four billion anonymous data points a day, adding to the world’s largest repository of transit data and helping map and maintain local transit information. Moovit will first run its public transit data and services on the Microsoft Azure cloud, before gradually adding its other products.

By integrating Moovit’s transit data into Azure Maps, developers can build richer apps, including information on A-to-B trip planning, nearby stations, stops and lines, and scheduled and real-time transit arrivals.

“Moovit’s top quality transit data and world-leading multi-modality services perfectly fit in to the Microsoft Azure Maps portfolio of offerings for app developers,” said Nir Erez, co-founder and CEO at Moovit. “We’re delighted to work with a world class company like Microsoft and integrate our rich transit APIs into Azure Maps so developers can build greater apps for people who ride transit everywhere.”

“Developers and customers alike have been asking for a comprehensive mapping solution that brings together location awareness with public transit data to provide a full picture,” said Tara Prakriya, group program manager for Azure Maps and Connected Vehicles at Microsoft. “By offering location awareness with public transit data on Microsoft Azure Maps, developers not only can create more sophisticated and smarter, real-time location-based apps, but our cloud customers across a variety of industries like automotive, public sector, manufacturing and healthcare will be able to leverage this data to continue to improve how people get around and get access to services globally.”
