Microsoft to end support for Internet Explorer in 2021

Customers will be encouraged to use Microsoft Edge for improved user experiences

Microsoft apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer from 17 August 2021. Microsoft is encouraging customers to switch to Microsoft Edge for improved user experiences.

According to a recent Microsoft blog post, the browser will first be removed for use from the Microsoft Teams web application from November 2020.

While customers’ own legacy apps and investments on the browser will continue to work, Microsoft said that once support has been withdrawn after the above dates, “customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services” and certain features may no longer be available.

“Customers have been using IE 11 since 2013 when the online environment was much less sophisticated than the landscape today,” Microsoft said in the blog post. “Since then, open web standards and newer browsers – like the new Microsoft Edge – have enabled better, more innovative online experiences. We believe that Microsoft 365 subscribers, in both consumer and commercial contexts, will be well served with this change through faster and more responsive web access to greater sets of features in everyday toolsets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and more.”

To avoid a two-browser workflow, Microsoft is suggesting that users leverage the new Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer mode to standardise on one browser.
