Microsoft is the strategic technology partner and principal sponsor of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is taking place in Sharm-El Sheikh, Egypt, between 6 and 18 November 2022.
Through the partnership, Microsoft aims to help people and organisations better understand how technology can be used to help solve the complex climate challenges facing the world today.
“The world needs to move faster and COP27 will provide an important forum to move from pledges to progress,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft. “We are proud to partner with the Egyptian government and support this urgent effort.”
Smith spoke at the First Movers Coalition Leaders Panel on 8 November. “People sometimes look at this COP and say its only about implementation,” he said. “I think implementation is a fancy word for getting real work done.”
Microsoft’s pavilion in the green zone at the conference has been built primarily from recycled materials and was designed based on the principles of the circular economy. The technology company is aiming towards a sustainable future by reducing its environmental footprint, advancing research and advocating for policies that benefit the environment.
“We believe in the transformative power of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties and are proud to again play a key role in this year’s event,” said Mirna Arif, general manager for Microsoft Egypt. “We applaud the efforts of the Egyptian government, under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in prioritising climate change as part of Egypt Vision 2030.
“Technology will provide answers to many of today’s most pressing climate challenges, and COP27 is an opportunity for the public and private sectors to collaborate on climate solutions to accelerate progress in Egypt and across the wider region.”
