The Mobile World Congress 2018 is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry, organised by the GSMA, who represent the interests of mobile operators worldwide, and held in Barcelona, Spain 26 February – 1 March 2018.

“This year we decided to focus a lot more on topics that we believe will create that future so augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, security technologies like blockchain, robotics, drones, really picking up on those areas that are maybe not big names or household names but people who are really thought leaders in those spaces,” said Michael O’Hara, chief marketing officer from the GSMA in an online interview.

The event will also cover how mobile technology can be used achieve the 17 united nations sustainable development goals and also how it can be used to help startup organisations to enhance their business.

Industry leaders including Microsoft and its partners will gather, network, showcase, and exchange ideas. Key speakers include Ajit Pai, chairman of the United States Federal Communications Commission, Sue Siegel, chief innovation officer and CEO at GE, Fernando Alonso, McLaren Formula 1 Driver and Hiroshi Mikitani, CEO at Rakuten.

“For us as organisers we wanted to turn the focus around to what mobile is enabling so the theme this year is creating a better future, and this really reflects our belief that mobile plays a huge role in achieving the 17 United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals,” O’Hara said.
