Microsoft has completed the acquisition of Deis – a specialist in the field of container technology.

Containers allow organisations to more easily build, deploy and move applications to and from the cloud, and have played a major part in the adoption of cloud technologies in recent years.

Deis’s technology gives developers with the tools they need to improve the agility, efficiency and reliability of their applications via the company’s Kubernetes container management technologies.

The team at Deis also has vast experience with open source technology. The acquisition will therefore enhance Microsoft’s commitment to improving developer productivity.

“Members of the Deis team are strong supporters of the open source community – developing tools, contributing code and organising developer meetups,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president, Cloud and Enterprise Group, Microsoft. “We expect Deis’ technology to make it even easier for customers to work with our existing container portfolio including Linux and Windows Server Containers, Hyper-V Containers and Azure Container Service, no matter what tools they choose to use.”

“Microsoft has a storied history of building tools and technologies that work for developers,” said Gabriel Monroy, CTO at Deis. “Paired with their cloud leadership and unambiguous support for open source software, we are impressed by the breadth, depth and reach of Microsoft to help define, shape and build new cloud-native applications. We look forward to making Azure the best place to run containerised workloads.”
