Helsinki Bus Transportation Company has achieved a 5% reduction in fuel costs and a 7% rise in customer satisfaction levels after adopting Microsoft Power BI for Office 365 and other analytics tools.
Working with CGI (formerly Logica), the Finnish operator developed a data warehouse solution to help streamline cost analysis by tracking financial and operational data. The solution leverages Microsoft SQL Server, SharePoint, Office and Power Map and collects a large volume of data from sensors installed across the fleet of buses. These sensors capture real-time performance data including geographic location, braking or accelerating information, and fuel consumption.
By using Power Map, the company can visualise operational performance by a single driver or across the system, enabling it to identify which routes experience the most delays and breakdowns. In addition, the solution enables the operator to correlate individual driver data to information about specific traffic incidents or customer feedback. This makes it easier for management to understand the factors contributing to costs, as well as review and improve the performance of its staff.
“There are fleet tracking systems already in the marketplace, but they only resolve the issue of tracking per vehicle,” said Michael Andersson, the company’s technical director. “Our data warehouse solution can combine the data across all buses and lines, which gives us snapshots of data that are easy to understand and helpful in solving business problems.”
Within the first two years of implementation, the company has been able to recoup its investment, recording significant fuel savings and improving the performance of its drivers and vehicles.
