Microsoft Azure HDInsight is now available as a public preview for all customers in China, making Microsoft the first global cloud provider to have a publicly available cloud Hadoop-as-a-service offering in the country.
Local and multi-national Chinese corporations can use Azure HDInsight to process large volumes of data from both unstructured and semi-structured sources
Hadoop is an open-source platform that allows companies to store and process large amounts of data, from both their traditional data architecture and new big data sources.
For example, Taiwanese tea and dessert restaurant chain Blackball used Hadoop to combine traditional data from its POS systems with new big data from social media and weather feeds to understand why customers are purchasing their products. After leveraging Hadoop, Blackball identified that the weather was not a major factor in the sales of hot and cold beverages, enabling it to adjust its products to consumer demand.
