The Microsoft Teams Direct Routing capability is now available. This new service enables enterprises to connect their existing voice infrastructures to the Microsoft Teams environment directly and enables them to call numbers outside of the Microsoft cloud.

Digital infrastructure provider Tata Communications has been announced as one of the launch partners. “This breakthrough for cloud-based collaboration means that our customers will be able to make the most of the flexibility and scale of Microsoft Teams, whilst leveraging their existing voice assets,” said Peter Quinlan, Tata Communications’ vice president for Business Collaboration. “It’s all about enabling enterprises to plan a smooth transition to the cloud and other digital platforms at a pace that works for them, and paving the way for truly borderless, seamless collaboration. In this age of flexible working and globally dispersed teams, our leading-edge performance monitoring tools will also ensure that users everywhere will have the best possible collaboration experience with Microsoft Teams.”

Telecommunications provider BT is also working alongside Microsoft on the launch. “The new service builds on our global strengths in networking, security and voice enablement,” said an official BT press release. “We already provide managed services for over 500,000 Skype for Business users across six global data centres — geographically separated for a more resilient service.”

In a blog post announcing the service, Paul Canon, senior product marketing manager for Skype for Business, said the company is continuing to enhance Direct Routing. This includes “plans to deliver improved support for escalating calls, media bypass, and enhanced trunk support to help our partners scale their solutions,” he said.
