To prevent aeroplane crashes caused by objects on runways, Hitachi Kokusai Electric has participated in a government project to develop millimetre-wave radars for detecting foreign objects on runways, using Ansys HFSS and Ansys Cloud. High-frequency simulation software (HFSS) provides multiple solutions for a range of analyses in an integrated user interface. Ansys Cloud was able to simulate the model in 10 hours on a virtual machine of Microsoft Azure with Intel processor cores, compared to 8.5 days for an on-premises solution. Basic performance of the foreign object detection (FOD) radar has now been confirmed in the demonstration system installed at Narita International Airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
