45 MAR K E TWATCH : E V ENT P R E V I EW Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) 2022 will take place on 15-17 November at the Gran Via Venue in Barcelona, Spain, bringing together leaders from business and government to explore how technology can empower cities and drive urban innovation. Now in its 11th year, SCEWC will focus on the theme of ‘cities inspired by people’, with sustainability, modern mobility, inclusivity, accessibility, security and safety as key topics. Microsoft experts and thought leaders will be showcasing how artificial intelligence, machine learning and the cloud are empowering governments to use innovative tools that bring more forward-thinking, efficient and secure services to their citizens. The events main message will focus on showcasing how businesses can build skills for strong economic growth; provide personalised and digital services; deliver trusted and secure infrastructure; and achieve a resilient, sustainable future. The event will also be run as a hybrid experience, with a physical event in Barcelona being supported by a digital programme broadcast by Tomorrow.City. As such, the event could reach a wider audience than ever before, with more than 24,000 in-person attendees, 20,000 online participants, 1,000 exhibitors and 400 speakers expected. In addition to attending conference sessions, people will be able to explore the expo, a marketplace where businesses and organisations can showcase their projects and solutions, and participate in side events and activities focused on addressing the challenges facing modern cities. “The global population is expected to grow to 10 billion by 2050, and 70 per cent of these people will live in cities,” said a spokesperson for SCEWC. “In 40 years, we will have built as many new cities as in all of human history.
