Technology Record - Issue 42: Autumn 2026

156 be linked directly to product creation and launch. Rather than reacting to demand after the fact, organisations can increasingly identify emerging trends earlier and accelerate the path from concept to market. These capabilities are no longer theoretical. They are already emerging across a new generation of retail technology companies, providing practical examples of how frontier firms are beginning to operate. Companies such as Lyric and Buynomics illustrate different aspects of this trend, enabling teams to model scenarios, evaluate tradeoffs and test the implications of pricing, promotion and supply chain decisions before execution. What distinguishes the retailers and consumer goods companies successfully moving beyond AI pilots is not the sophistication of the technology, but how deeply intelligence is embedded into everyday operations. The organisations making the greatest progress start with a recurring business decision, connect the relevant data, define appropriate human oversight and integrate AI directly into existing workflows. Success is measured through operational outcomes rather than technical performance. Achieving this at scale rarely depends on a single technology provider. I see the value of partnerships between technology platforms, systems integrators and specialist startups in how the pieces come together around a customer problem. Microsoft provides the cloud, data and AI foundation, along with access to an enterprise ecosystem. Systems integrators bring industry knowledge, process redesign and implementation experience. Startups contribute specialised technology and can often move quickly in areas where the market is still developing. In my work with Microsoft for Startups, I look for solutions that connect to customers’ systems of record and become part of the planning or execution workflow rather than sitting alongside it. Companies such as Auger and Pelico demonstrate how intelligence can be embedded directly into daily decision-making and execution, while General Robotics illustrates how partnerships between startups, cloud providers and systems integrators can accelerate the adoption of physical AI in operational environments. The retailers leading the next decade won’t be those with the most AI pilots; they’ll be those redesigning their operating models, so intelligence, decision-making and execution become part of a continuous system. “ Retailers leading the next decade won’t be those with the most AI pilots; they’ll be those redesigning their operating models” VIEWPOINT Photo: iStock/imaginima Physical AI is bringing autonomous decision-making to logistics operations, connecting digital intelligence with realworld execution
