Microsoft acquires machine-learning solutions provider Equivio

Microsoft has acquired Equivio, a provider of machine learning-powered eDiscovery and information governance solutions, to help its customers tackle legal and compliance challenges when managing documents.

Equivio’s solution applies machine-learning technology and advanced text analytics to perform multi-dimensional analyses of unstructured data collections, intelligently sorting documents into themes, grouping near-duplicates and isolating unique data. This helps users to quickly identify the documents they need more quickly than manual, or keyword searches.

As part of this process, users train the system to identify documents relevant to a particular subject, such as a legal case or investigation.

“Microsoft is serious about providing customers with tools to manage the legal and compliance requirements that are key to responsible business practices,” said Rajesh Jha, corporate vice president of Outlook and Office 365 at Microsoft, in a blog post. “Office 365 includes robust eDiscovery and information governance capabilities today, and we’ll use Equivio’s machine learning technology to make these vital tools even more intelligent and easy to use in the months ahead.”

Equivio’s technology has been used widely in the legal community and its customers include US federal agencies and hundreds of law firms, corporations and other organisations.
