Microsoft has created a Microsoft Climate Research Initiative (MCRI) to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. The first phase of research will focus on finding ways to overcome constraints to decarbonisation, reducing uncertainties in carbon accounting and assessing climate risks.

MCRI aims to develop and sustain a highly engaged research ecosystem, drawing on insights from experts with a variety of perspectives. The initiative will bring together representatives from industries, governments, academia and civil society, and draw upon Microsoft’s computational advances to progress ways to combat climate issues.

“As researchers, we’re excited to work together on projects specifically selected for their potential impact on global climate challenges,” said Karin Strauss, senior principal research manager at Microsoft Research. “With Microsoft’s computational capabilities and the domain expertise from our collaborators, our complementary strengths can accelerate progress in incredible ways.”

Microsoft researchers will work with collaborators from across the world to co-investigate priority climate-related topics.
