New Anniversary Update coming to Windows 10 next month

Microsoft is to release a major update to Windows 10 next month.

As part of its Anniversary Update, Microsoft will be introducing features that bring Windows Ink and Cortana to the mainstream, a more power-efficient Microsoft Edge browser, as well as advanced security features for consumers and enterprises.

Over 350 million devices globally are now running Windows 10. Everyone running Windows 10 will get the new features for free as part of the Anniversary Update.

The update includes additional security features and built-in protection. This includes two big security innovations around Windows Hello and Windows Defender. Windows Hello can now be used to unlock the PC, giving users more choices for quick, secured sign-ins. The free anti-malware service Windows Defender now includes the option to automatically schedule periodic quick scans of a PC, and provide new notifications and summaries when scans are complete and threats are found.

Microsoft is also launching two new major security features with the Anniversary Update – Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection and Windows Information Protection.

A new tool named Windows Ink is available for the first time with the update, and allows users to draw or note their ideas and safely save them to revert back to.

Other features of the update include making Cortana accessible from a device’s lockscreen, extensions to the Microsoft Edge browser, including Pinterest’s ‘Pin It Button’ and Amazon Assistant, and more options for gamers.

Customers in the education space can also enjoy a number of the update’s features, including an advanced set up and deployment process, quicker login and a ‘Take a Test’ app that allows that creates a browser-based, locked-down environment for more secure, online assessments.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update will be available from 2 August.
