Joint effort aims to investigate the impact of cyberattacks and help secure the internet

Microsoft has teamed up with the Hewlett Foundation and Mastercard to launch the CyberPeace Institute, a new endeavour which aims to investigate the impact of cyberattacks and help secure the internet.

The CyberPeace Institute will focus on three core functions:

Assistance: Coordinating recovery efforts for the most vulnerable victims of cyberattacks and helping vulnerable communities and organisations become more resilient to attacks.

Accountability: Facilitating the collective analysis, research and investigation of cyberattacks, including by assessing their harm, and bringing greater transparency to the problem so everyone has better information to inform action.

Advancement: Promoting responsible behaviour in cyberspace and advancing international laws and rules.

“The global disruptions from cyberattacks are the symptoms of an insidious threat targeting civilians at a time of peace” said Stéphane Duguin, CEO of the CyberPeace Institute. “We need concrete solutions to build resilience among vulnerable communities, shed light on the malicious activity of attackers and inform responsible behaviour in cyberspace. I am looking forward to leading the CyberPeace Institute towards these goals, and engaging academia, civil society, governments and industry in a collective pursuit of peace in cyberspace.”

“Today, with the launch of the CyberPeace Institute, the world will gain an important new ally in understanding the impact of cyberattacks, in working to develop rules for proper conduct in cyberspace and in helping the most vulnerable victims of cyberattacks become more resilient,” said Tom Burt, Microsoft corporate vice president for customer security and trust, in a blog post.

An eight-member executive board and 13-member advisory board comprising distinguished global experts in cybersecurity, international law, human rights and international affairs will provide guidance to the institute in achieving its purpose.
