Microsoft has introduced the latest product in its Surface line of devices. The new Surface Laptop will be powered by Windows 10 S, a new streamlined version of its operating system, and is thinner and lighter than any MacBook Air or MacBook Pro currently available on the market.

The new device has many similarities to the Surface Pro and Surface Book, including a 13.5-inch touch display and fabric covered keyboard. It runs a 7th Generation Intel Core processor and offers up to 14.5 hours of battery life.

“We built Surface Laptop to do two things: refresh the classic laptop form factor that our customers, especially college students, have been asking for; and make a Surface that works seamlessly to showcase the best of Windows 10 S,” said Panos Panay, corporate vice president of Microsoft Devices.

In essence, Surface Laptop has been designed to bring the best of Surface Pro and Surface Book together. “We took all of these innovations from Surface and brought them together to make a meticulously crafted laptop that is tailored for Windows 10 S,” Panay explained. “It is thinner, quieter, more powerful, and more personal because of every hard won lesson of the last five years.”

The device is available to pre-order now and will become available on 15 June in certain markets, including the UK and the US.
