Microsoft pledges to be carbon negative by 2030

Microsoft has made a pledge to become carbon negative by 2030. It has also promised that by 2050 it will remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975.

In addition to this, Microsoft will halve emissions created directly by itself and those involved in its supply chain. It has also announced a new initiative to help partners and customers reduce their own footprints and a US$1 billion fund to drive the development of technologies in carbon reduction and removal.

“While the world will need to reach net zero, those of us who can afford to move faster and go further should do so,” said Brad Smith, president of Microsoft. “That's why we are announcing an ambitious goal and a new plan to reduce and ultimately remove Microsoft's carbon footprint.”

Microsoft will also begin releasing an annual Environmental Sustainability Report which will detail its efforts.
