Travel group Expedia is developing a new in-app travel planning service powered by OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT.

Expedia members will be able to start a chat within the Expedia app and receive personalised recommendations for places to go, where to stay, food options, how to get around and more.

The artificial intelligence-powered chat service will also automatically bookmark hotels discussed in the conversation so that members can easily find them when booking their trips.

Expedia members can get advice on trips, what to do and where to stay

“Every great trip can be made or lost while planning and shopping,” said Peter Kern, vice chairman and CEO of Expedia Group. “By integrating ChatGPT into the Expedia app and combining it with our other AI-based shopping capabilities, like hotel comparison, price tracking for flights and trip collaboration tools, we can now offer travellers an even more intuitive way to build their perfect trip.”

The in-app integration follows on from a recent plugin that Expedia developed for ChatGPT where users can begin planning a trip from the ChatGPT website before being directed to Expedia to finish their booking.

The in-app experience will also make it easier for members to access discounts and rewards.

The beta version of the service is currently rolling out globally on the Expedia app.
