Steel Warehouse employs thousands of people and serves customers across 10 industries, handling around 350,000 tons of steel per day in the USA, and about 30,000 tons in Mexico. In the past, the company relied on five enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for document management processes across 23 specialised sites. Today, it has significantly improved these processes by migrating to Microsoft Dynamics 365.

After choosing Microsoft Dynamics 365, Steel Warehouse’s first job was archiving one terabyte of legacy vendor invoices. The team used Formpipe Autoform DM, a secure document archive for ERP systems, which is closely integrated with Formpipe’s Lasernet solution. Once the data was ingested, vendor information flowed into Dynamics 365.

Soon after, workers across all 23 sites could search documents from vendor accounts down to individual line items. Steel Warehouse also used the newly accessible data to create a 24/7 self-serve portal where customers can review their orders and product documentation.

Workers on the plant floor now rely on Lasernet’s drag-and-drop interface to print customer shipping and product labels. Before, employees endured a painstaking, error-ridden workflow to route the correct item to the right printer with the correct parameters. Now employees can find and format the data easily, customers receive a single email with all their shipping and product-specific documentation.

“Lasernet is so powerful,” says Michelle Spain, business systems analyst at Steel Warehouse. “I’ve always said it’s an input and output management tool, but it’s so much more than that. You can take your documents and make sure that they fit your needs and represent your business.”
