The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 (F1) Team will use Microsoft Azure to analyse data with AI, helping improve the speed, design and performance of its cars while ensuring all developments meet F1’s strict sporting and technical rules.

Each car carries more than 400 sensors, generating over 1.1 million data points per second on factors such as tyre wear, aerodynamics and track conditions. Microsoft’s technology will help the team monitor and  this data more effectively, enabling quick, data-driven decisions that comply with regulations – including during races, where choices often need to be made in fractions of a second.

“This partnership puts Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise AI technologies at the heart of racing performance, where milliseconds matter and data determines outcomes,” said Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft commercial business. “Together with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, we are harnessing data and turning it into real-time intelligence that powers faster decisions, smarter strategies and sustained competitive advantage both on and off the track.”

The team already uses Microsoft 365 and GitHub for parts of its engineering work, both at its Brackley and Brixworth headquarters in the UK and at the track. GitHub, for example, is used to design, model and simulate cars. This next phase of the partnership builds on this foundation, using Microsoft 365 to support faster, more accurate decision-making.

“Microsoft’s technology already plays a central role in how we operate as a business, and this partnership opens new opportunities to innovate as we look toward the next era of technological development,” said Richard Sanders, chief commercial officer for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.
