Microsoft and its partners have also developed two PCs that are compatible with Windows Mixed Reality
Microsoft is to reveal more details about its new Windows Mixed Reality headsets at IFA, which will take place in Berlin, Germany from 1-6 September 2017.
Developed over the past 10 months, the Windows Mixed Reality Headsets have been created by Microsoft in collaboration with some of the world’s largest PC makers, including Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer.
The headsets will be the first to deliver virtual reality experiences with built-in sensors to track the user’s physical position without requiring them to purchase and install external sensors so they can be used anywhere.
Customers can also choose from various Windows Mixed Reality headsets and motion controllers developed by HP, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer. Microsoft and its partners have also developed two PCs that are compatible with Windows Mixed Reality. Windows Mixed Reality PCs will consist of desktops and laptops with integrated graphics, allowing the headsets to run at 60 frames per second. Meanwhile, the Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs will comprise desktops and laptops with discrete graphics and the headsets will run at 90 frames per second.
“Since 21 January 2015 when we announced Microsoft HoloLens, we have seen developers, partners, and customers innovate in ways we have never seen before,” said Alex Kipman, technical fellow at Microsoft, in a blog post. “As a creator, it is inspiring to see the world embrace mixed reality; to see organisations and developers stretch the boundaries of what we can do with technology. Together we have created the most vibrant mixed reality community out there and it has been phenomenal to share in this journey with our community.”
To enhance the Windows Mixed Reality experience for the consumer space, Microsoft is working with 343 Industries to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality and also gaming platform Steam.
“Mixed reality is the future, and we want everyone on the journey with us,” said Kipman. “For customers, we are creating the best, most affordable mixed reality headsets and bringing you immersive experiences that you will love. For developers, we are making it easy to create great content spanning from simple augmented reality to virtual reality and of course holograms.”
