Norway Royal Salmon (NRS) has piloted an artificial intelligence (AI) solution from Microsoft and technology firm ABB. The product can be used to improve fishing sustainability and safety by monitoring the salmon population via underwater cameras.
By using remote object detection, NRS can reduce its staff workload and send them out to sea less often, thus reducing carbon emissions from boat operations and the likelihood of safety incidents.
“NRS has always focused on extensive research, development, cooperation and innovation,” said Arve Olav Lervag, chief operating officer of farming at NRS. “To continuously improve sustainability and increase the safety of our individuals, we worked with ABB and Microsoft to co-create innovative ways that empower us to achieve more on every level.”
The underwater cameras capture images of the salmon, which the Microsoft Azure-based AI solution then analyses for biomass and population estimation.
