Microsoft has volunteered to support the Biden-Harris Administration in the USA to manage and protect against the risks posed by artificial intelligence.

Microsoft has made commitments alongside six other leading AI Companies – Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta and OpenAI – to progress the safe, secure and transparent development of AI technology.

“Companies that are developing these emerging technologies have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe,” said a press release from the White House. “To make the most of AI’s potential, the Biden-Harris Administration is encouraging this industry to uphold the highest standards to ensure that innovation doesn’t come at the expense of Americans’ rights and safety.”

The agreement follows on from Microsoft’s own commitments to the responsible development of AI including the AI Assurance Programme and AI skills training initiative.

“Microsoft’s additional commitments focus on how we will further strengthen the ecosystem and operationalise the principles of safety, security and trust,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president at Microsoft, in a recent blog. “We welcome the president’s leadership in bringing the tech industry together to hammer out concrete steps that will help make AI safer, more secure, and more beneficial for the public.

“Establishing codes of conduct early in the development of this emerging technology will not only help ensure safety, security, and trustworthiness, it will also allow us to better unlock AI’s positive impact for communities across the USA and around the world.”
